Interpretive Signs for Chilkoot State Recreation Area

The Chilkoot River Corridor Working Group developed an Interpretive Site Plan (ISP) at the end of their time as a group.  Part of that was to design four interpretive signs for the Chilkoot Corridor.  One of the first things the ACBF did was to find funding to fabricate and install those signs.

Bear Guide Training

Bears, sport fishermen, campers, photographers and visitors share the narrow Chilkoot Corridor in close proximity to each other.  As the numbers of visitors has increased to the tens of thousands, there is increased concern for the safety of bears and people.  Some tour guides in Haines are residents, but others are summer people from out of town.  ACBF saw a need to offer a training for guides who will be dealing with bears and large numbers of people.  This training is in cooperation with Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game and Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation.  It is given annually.

Informational Brochures

ACBF has published several informational brochures on the Chilkoot River Corridor and safe behavior in bear country.

Bear Proof Trash Cans to Haines Borough

With funding from the Chilkat Valley Community Foundation, the ACBF purchased two bear proof trash cans for public use in the Haines Borough.  The Borough Manager liked the idea and purchased more.

Recycle Container for Chilkoot State Recreation Area

With funding from the Chilkat Valley Community Foundation, the ACBF purchased a recycle container for  the Chilkoot State Recreation Area.  The park had bear proof trash cans, but nowhere for recyclables.

Haines Borough Ordinance

The ACBF proposed a bear attraction nuisance ordinance to the Haines Borough.  After public hearings, it was adopted as Chapter 8.20 Bear Attraction Nuisance, and it prohibits leaving trash or other bear attractants.

Electric Fences and Critter Gitters for public use through Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game

With funding from the Chilkat Valley Community Foundation, the ACBF purchased two electric fence kits and two Critter Gitters for Fish and Game to loan to the public.
